Landscaping Grass vs Sports Turf: What’s the Difference?

At a glance, all artificial grass can look alike. But landscaping turf and sports turf are engineered for very different demands, and choosing the wrong type leads to poor performance and a shorter lifespan. Here is how they differ.

Designed for different jobs

Landscaping grass is made to look and feel like a natural lawn — soft underfoot, realistic in color and texture, and attractive year-round for gardens, balconies and commercial spaces.

Sports turf is built for performance — ball roll, shock absorption, traction and the ability to withstand intense, repeated use on pitches, courts and gyms.

Yarn and structure

Landscaping turf typically uses soft polyethylene yarn with a natural multi-tone color and a curly thatch layer for realism. Sports turf uses tougher, more resilient fibers (often with higher dtex) designed to spring back under cleats and heavy traffic.

Pile height and density

  • Landscaping: usually 30–40mm pile for a lush look, with moderate density focused on comfort and appearance.
  • Sports: pile height varies by sport — short and dense for putting greens and tennis, longer (40–60mm) with infill for football and rugby.

Infill and shock absorption

Sports systems usually require infill (silica sand and/or rubber granules) and often a shock pad underneath to meet safety and performance standards. Landscaping grass generally needs only a light sand dressing, or none at all.

Durability and standards

Sports turf must pass sport-specific tests (FIFA, ITF, World Rugby, etc.) for ball bounce, friction and impact absorption. Landscaping turf focuses on UV stability, colorfastness and a natural look, with standards around safety and environmental compliance instead.

Cost and lifespan

Sports installations are engineered systems with a higher upfront cost but are built to survive years of intensive play. Landscaping grass is more affordable per square meter and, with basic care, easily lasts 8–10 years in a residential setting.

Which do you need?

If you want a beautiful, low-maintenance lawn, choose landscaping grass. If the surface will host regular sport or training, invest in a certified sports turf system. When in doubt, tell your supplier the intended use — a good manufacturer will match the spec to your project.
